Getting traffic to your sites or blogs without analyzing it, without knowing what are the keywords your visitors used is like being blindfolded in a crowd.

Is the entire world in 'recession'? Maybe - I don't deny that we are currently in one of the most difficult ecnomic times ... BUT

I also know that there many rich people who are still buying stuff online everyday!

Your job is to find these people using long-tail keywords and present your offer to them!

One more thing before we dive in, take a look at my server log (awstats) for this 'baby niche'.

Only 408 unique visitors (1st - 15th Mar 2009), but that tiny blog has already earned well over $217 in commissions for me because I know what are the profitable keywords to target!

Remember, the 'baby' niche is ultra competitive - without knowing the long tail keywords, there is no way I could rank high enough in the search engine results page to make the sales.

Ok, you've seen enough proof - let's dive in ...

When someone goes online to search, they are either in:

1. Research Mode (the keywords used are usually broad and general)

2. Buy Mode (the user has done the research and is now looking for the specific products)

You want to target those people who are in the "Buy Mode".

Example:
- General keyword: Baby Clothes (BAD - research mode)
- Long Tail Keyword: Poodle Tutu Set (GOOD - buy mode)

The searcher who used 'baby clothes' are probably researching about the different types of baby clothes, but the searcher who entered 'poodle tutu set' already knows what she wants and she is probably looking for the best place to buy.

Target the searcher looking for 'poodle tutu set' if you want to make money!

So, how do you find these 'long tail keywords'? You could go to your favorite keyword tool such as Google Keyword tool, Keyword Elite, Spyfu, Wordtracker, etc ... OR

You could also look into your webserver logs and see the keywords people are entering into the search engines to find your site. Look at the log below:

There are 205 different key phrases used by searchers to reach my baby blog. These long tail keywords are priceless because they are unique to my site. They are not available anywhere else.

If I'm hardworking (I'm not), I would take each of those (gasp!) 205 long-tail keywords, enter them into Google, and go through the results page until I find my site. This will tell me my site's current position in the search engine results pages (SERP).

Then, I will optimize that page (e.g. add more backlinks to that page from articles, web2.0 sites, social-bookmarking sites, etc) so that it will rise to the 1st page on Google's SERP.

However, that's a LOT of work ... and I'm just too lazy (I have over 40 blogs and sites!)

Further more, those keywords are not displayed in real-time, they only appear 24hrs later in my server logs. I want to know those keywords now, not 24hrs later!

Hence I cobbled together a script last July (2008) to alert me immediately via email the keywords used by searchers. It had no name, I was using it myself on all my blogs and sites.

• Write articles on the subject and submit to ezinearticles to get backlinks to that page
• Add more pages with the keyword 'tutu pant set' on your site.
• Add some .social-bookmarking love. to that page and sprinkle some backlink juice from other web2.0 sites

You get the idea.

"What are the long tail keywords that lead people to your websites or blogs?"
